Loaded Boards – Icarus – Deck

Loaded pioneered the flexible dropthru board with the Dervish in 2007 and the Tan Tien in 2010. We’ve returned to our carving roots using many of the things learned over the past few years from our freeride boards, downhill boards, and our snowboard (with design cues from bacon). Combining wheel flares, cork, a balanced flex pattern and novel manufacturing methods, the Icarus is a milestone in our exploration of the soulful carving experience.

LONGBOARD SPECS

Length: 38.4” (97.5 cm)
Width: 8.6” (22 cm)
Wheelbase: 28.25” (71.76 cm)
Weight
Deck: 2.9 lbs (1.3 kg)
Complete: 6.5 lbs (2.9 kg) w/Fat Frees, 7.4 lbs (3.4 kg) w/Kegels

FLEX

Flex 1: 170-250+lbs / 75-115+kg
Flex 2: 75-200+lbs / 35-90+kg

Powerful Flex—Vertically laminated bamboo and fiberglass construction pair with a cambered profile and a variable concave for a lively and engaging ride. The cork bottom helps dampen out vibrations without compromising the liveliness.

User Friendly—Drop-through truck mounting positions the deck lower to the ground for easier, more efficient pushing and enhanced stability. Light weight and compact size make the Icarus intuitive and commuter friendly.

Shapely Curves—The right curves in the right places enhance rider ergonomics while contributing to a responsive and high-performance ride. Wheel well flares accommodate big wheels and improve turning leverage and control. Variable concave yields a consistent flex pattern while providing a variety of riding experiences based on foot placement.

Practical Kicks—Minimal nose and tail kicks help navigate city streets and open the door for freestyle trickery.

The Icarus: Because sometimes you need to fly too high.

SHAPE
The shape of the Icarus echoes the elegantly utilitarian outline popularized by the Dervish and Tan Tien. Its mid-sized length and wheelbase strike a balance between stability and maneuverability, accommodating a (slightly-wider-than-) shoulder-width stance for most riders. Straight rails along the standing platform ensure torsional stability, while full-figured cutouts at the tips allow for deep turns without wheelbite.

CAMBER
The cambered profile pairs with the bamboo core and epoxy/fiberglass skins (as well as the concaves and wheel flares) to create an active suspension with ungodly energy return. Pump away!

WHEEL WELL FLARES
Flared wheel wells do three things for the Icarus:

• Increase wheel clearance, allowing for larger wheels
• Stiffen the necks, creating more direct energy transfer to the trucks
• Create an ergonomic lock, letting you know where you are by feel and giving you strong leverage points to push against
VARIABLE CONCAVE
Because the flares stiffen the necks we needed to create a variable concave to balance out the flex pattern. Tighter concave in the center of the board prevents the deck from folding at the center, while more subtle concave underfoot near the flares locks you in and feels yummy. This was inspired by the flex patterning explored for our snowboard, the Algernon.

NOSE & TAIL KICKS
Minimal nose and tail kicks allow for enhanced maneuverability in tight quarters while also opening the door to exploring freestyle trickery. The kicks are reinforced with an additional layer of fiberglass for added stiffness and durability.

FLEX RECOMMENDATIONS
Flex 1: 170-250+lbs / 75-115+kg
Flex 2: 75-200+lbs / 35-90+kg

A softer flex gives you more control and tighter turns at slower speeds and makes it easier to slide, but it tends to lose stability slightly at higher speeds. Stiffer flex means more energy potential, more stability at higher speeds, and greater durability under hard freestyle riding, but it will not be as forgiving and lively when cruising. As always, our flex ratings are recommendations. Try ‘em out and see what suits you.

NAME & GRAPHICS
Drawing from Greek Mythology, this board takes its name from Icarus, whose master-craftsman father Daedalus built the Labyrinth for King Minos to imprison the Minotaur. After Daedalus himself was imprisoned by Minos, he created two pairs of wax and feather wings for himself and Icarus to use in escaping the island of Crete. Despite his father’s warning to follow his flight path, Icarus found himself captivated by the thrill of flight and ascended too high into the sky. The sun’s heat melted the wax in his wings, causing him to fall into the sea.

Moral of the story? Get better wings.

CONSTRUCTION
Epoxy and triaxial fiberglass sandwich a 5-part vertically laminated bamboo core, pressed into concave and convex cambers for liveliness, responsiveness and high energy potential. Drop-through cutouts are CNC milled for precision.

Biscuits and Gravy: To achieve the dramatic wheel well contours without cracking the core, we developed “biscuit” inserts. We machine out the cores in areas of extreme curvature (where the wild wheel flares are) and drop in four separate bamboo “biscuits” in order to mitigate the stresses. The “five” resulting cores are bonded together using our proprietary, high performance epoxy and sandwiched between triaxial glass skins to create this curvaceous beast.

An extra layer of fiberglass is applied on the nose and tail for additional rigidity in the kicks.

Loaded Boards – Bhangra – Deck

The Loaded Boards Bhangra is built with a dancer in mind. If you’ve ever had a chance to see Adam Colton ride this boat of a board you’ll understand just how fun it can be.

A more compact dancing/freestyle deck, the Bhangra offers plenty of foot space to get your dancing groove on yet is compact and lightweight enough to facilitate steezy slides and advanced flatland tricks. Upturned nose and tail kicks, purposeful griptape patterns, rocker, mellow concave and damp flex (created in part by the use of epoxy bio-resin & cork) result in comfortable and functional ergonomics that inspire confidence on both the dance floor and the hills.

Length: 48.5″ / 123 cm
Width: 9.5″ / 24 cm
Wheelbase (Inner Hole): 32.75″ / 83.19 cm
Weight:
Deck: 5.6 – 6.3 lbs / 2.5 – 2.9 kg
Complete: 9.4 – 10.1 lbs / 4.3 – 4.58 kg

FLEX

Flex 1 150-270+ lbs / 75-122+ kg
Flex 2: 90-190+ lbs / 40-86+ kg

ROCKER
The rocker (slight “U” bend when viewed from the side) really sinks you into the board and gives you that extra cushy, locked in feel. Feels great for dancing, makes sliding a lot easier and more comfortable, and puts the board lower to the ground, making pushing slightly easier.

CONCAVE
We added a mellow “U” concave to give you more confidence when sliding. The concave also helps lock your feet in when landing big spins and such but is still mellow and comfortable enough for footwork moves.

NOSE AND TAIL KICKS
More nose and tail curvatures allow for easier catching of the nose and tail. With good timing, you can ollie the Bhangra. Not easy, but it can be done. Both the nose and tail will lock your feet in nicely for manuals, but the different lengths result in distinct feelings of balance and pop. You may find riding the board in a certain direction better for some tricks; for example, the tail is really good for catching shuvits-to-manuals, while the nose feels better for hang ten manuals.

GRIPTAPE
This is our most thought out grip design to date featuring a functional, shoe saving design and two different types of griptape.

For the main standing platform, we used a mellower grip with a functional pattern to save your shoes. As you all know, when you do pivot motions on grip tape you slowly wear out the balls of your shoes; you are basically grinding away your soles on sandpaper. We cut out this grip design so that when you do your spinning moves, most of your shoe will move freely on the bamboo, not the grip tape. We also designed it so you still have plenty of grip tape on the rails of the board for confidence when sliding.

We used a gnarlier, gripper griptape on the nose and tail to help give you that extra locked in feeling when holding out manuals. The extra grip also makes it easier to catch the nose and tail for quick shuvit-to-manual moves.

EPOXY BIO-RESIN
Resin plays a big part in how a board feels. We tried out a variety of resins, each having their own energy return properties and flex characteristics. For a board like this, we really dug a more mellow, damp feeling resin. Something that sinks nicely under your feet and does not have so much energy return that it wants to buck you off. We classify the flex as soft, damp, almost “dead” flex. In contrast, a Dervish Sama has a more lively, springy flex.

WHEEL WELLS
We designed functional wheel wells to accommodate several brands of 180mm trucks and 70mm wheels without risers. They will prevent wheelbite in most circumstances; however, you may encounter bite if you run super loose trucks with soft bushings.

FLEX
Flex 1: 150-250+ lbs
Flex 2: 90-190+ lbs

Flex 2 is what Adam S. (150 lbs) and Adam C. (160 lbs) ride. The Adams prefer a board with a bit of flex to it (feels a lot better for freestyle). You can still take the flex 2 plenty fast and do slides comfortably, thanks to the rocker and concave. Flex 1 is definitely stiffer, and if you are 160 lbs it will flex only slightly under you. If you like stiffer boards and plan on doing hard pounding tricks with this board or weigh more (over 190 lbs), this is your board.

DIRECTIONAL SHAPE
Distinct nose and tail shapes create different amounts of leverage for different tricks. The standing platform is slightly wider in the front of the board to concentrate leverage over the front truck for predictable turn initiation while dancing.
